Why Canberra Homeowners Are Switching to LED Strip Lighting

By Alex · January 2026 · 5 min read

LED strip lighting has gone from a novelty to one of the most popular requests we get. A few years ago, it was mostly used under kitchen cabinets. Now we’re installing it in hallways, behind TVs, under bathroom vanities, in ceiling recesses and along outdoor soffits.

The reason is simple: done properly, LED strip lighting changes how a room feels. It creates depth, warmth and a sense of quality that standard downlights can’t match. And Canberra’s climate, with its long, dark winters, makes the difference even more noticeable.

What makes it different from a DIY kit?

The cheap LED strips you can buy online have a ceiling. They use low-quality LEDs that fade within a year, they’re not rated for wet areas, and they run off plug packs rather than proper circuits. They also lack proper heat management, which shortens their lifespan dramatically.

Professional-grade strip lighting uses high-density LEDs on aluminium channels (which manage heat properly), is wired to dedicated circuits, and can be integrated with dimmers and scene control so you’re not stuck with one brightness level.

Where does it work best?

  • Kitchen — under-cabinet task lighting and recess lighting above upper cabinets
  • Hallways — recessed into the ceiling or along skirting for a contemporary corridor effect
  • Living areas — cove lighting or behind entertainment units for ambient depth
  • Bathrooms — under vanities and in niches (IP-rated strips only)

The key is getting the colour temperature right. Warm white (2700-3000K) works well in living areas and bedrooms. Cool white (4000K+) is better for task areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Tunable white strips give you both in a single installation, which is increasingly what we’re specifying for whole-home projects.

This is exactly the kind of finish our lighting design service is built around — see how it played out in our Phillip apartment project.
